University distance courses after Class 12
Many NIOS learners go on to study for a degree through distance or online learning. We offer general guidance on choosing a course and checking that it is recognised — we are not a university and do not enrol students for any university.
NIOS Class 12 and higher studies
On its FAQ page, NIOS states that:
- Its Secondary and Senior Secondary certificates are valid, recognised and on par with those of other national and state boards.
- The Association of Indian Universities has granted equivalence to NIOS courses for admission to higher studies.
- NIOS Senior Secondary learners can apply to universities and professional colleges for courses they otherwise qualify for.
- Certified learners may appear in competitive exams if they meet the eligibility criteria.
Distance and online learning
In India, universities offer degrees in open and distance learning (ODL) and online modes alongside regular programmes. Families often ask us about undergraduate options such as BA, BCom and BSc, and postgraduate options such as MA. Which programmes are available, and in which mode, depends entirely on the university.
The University Grants Commission's Distance Education Bureau (UGC DEB) publishes lists of institutions recognised or entitled to offer ODL and online programmes.
How to check a programme before you enrol

Note the university, the programme name and whether it is ODL or online. - 2
Check the UGC DEB lists
Look for the university and programme on the UGC DEB website for the academic year you plan to join. - 3
Read the eligibility
Confirm the university accepts your Class 12 subjects and marks for that course. - 4
Confirm fees and dates with the university
Only the university can confirm its own fees, deadlines and admission.
