NIOS On-Demand Exams, explained

The On-Demand Examination System (ODES) lets NIOS learners sit an exam when they feel prepared, instead of only at the twice-yearly public examinations. Here is who can use it and how it works.

What the On-Demand Examination System is

ODES is an examination facility NIOS provides alongside its public examinations. You appear according to your own preparation, at an NIOS exam centre, on a date you register for.

It is available at both Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) level.

Who can take On-Demand exams

You can take an On-Demand exam only in the subjects in which you are admitted to NIOS. NIOS describes these admission routes:

Stream-3 and Stream-4 learners can take part admission in one to four subjects.

Rules to know before you register

  • There are no On-Demand exams in April, May, October or November — the months of the public examinations.
  • You cannot register for On-Demand exams in the same subject twice in a month.
  • Question papers are available only in English and Hindi.
  • Exams are held at NIOS Regional Centres, NIOS Headquarters in Noida and designated Kendriya Vidyalayas. NIOS says learners of the Delhi region must appear at NIOS Headquarters, Noida.
  • You need your NIOS enrolment number and a valid NIOS identity card, and must bring the original ID card and another photo ID to the exam.
  • A passed subject can be improved as many times as you want through On-Demand exams (only once through the public examination).

How registration works

NIOS describes On-Demand registration as an online process:

    Check you are eligible

    Confirm your stream and that the subject is one you are admitted in.
  2. 2

    Register online

    Registration is done only online through the NIOS website. You authenticate with a scan of a valid government ID such as Aadhaar or a passport.
  3. 3

    Pay the fee online

    NIOS accepts credit card, debit card or net banking. Check the current fee on the NIOS page — we do not publish fee amounts because they change.
  4. 4

    Sit the exam

    Attend your allotted centre with your NIOS identity card and a second photo ID.
For registration problems, NIOS lists its own help contacts on the official ODE procedure page. We are not able to register you or change anything in your NIOS account.

The rules above apply to both levels. Each level has its own page with the details that differ:

On-Demand questions

Can I take an On-Demand exam without NIOS admission?

No. You need to be an NIOS learner in that subject — either through regular admission (Stream-1) or through Stream-3 or Stream-4 admission.

How quickly can I take an exam?

That depends on your stream, centre availability and the month. Stream-1 learners can use ODES after their first public examination. Check open slots when you register online.

Can I sit my On-Demand exam at a centre in Delhi?

NIOS's On-Demand procedure says learners of the Delhi region must appear at NIOS Headquarters in Noida. Check your allotted centre when you register.
