NIOS Class 10 admission guide
The NIOS Secondary course is NIOS's Class 10 qualification. This guide covers who can apply, what NIOS asks for, how subjects work and how the exams run — with links to the official pages for anything that can change.

About the NIOS Secondary course
NIOS describes its Secondary course as equivalent to the Xth Standard. It is studied through open schooling, so you learn from NIOS study material at your own pace and sit NIOS examinations, rather than attending a regular school timetable.
The course is offered in English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Odia mediums.
Who can apply
According to NIOS, you can apply for the Secondary course if you meet both of these conditions:
- You have passed Class 8.
- You have valid proof that you are at least 14 years old.
NIOS's admission FAQ also mentions a self-certificate for learners who have studied up to this level, and admission for former Secondary students who want to complete the course or improve their performance. The conditions for these routes are set by NIOS, so confirm them on the official FAQ before you rely on them.
Proof of age and residence
The NIOS sources we checked confirm these requirements:
- Proof of date of birth, such as a birth certificate issued by a municipal corporation, municipal body or village panchayat. NIOS also accepts an Aadhaar card as proof of date of birth.
- Proof of residence.
- For orphans and street children, NIOS accepts a medical certificate of age from a government hospital.
Choosing your subjects
To be certified, you must pass at least five subjects, including at least one and at most two languages. You can take up to two additional subjects, so up to seven in all.

If you have already passed some subjects at another board, you may be able to carry them across with Transfer of Credit.
Exams and passing
How NIOS assesses Secondary learners, according to its Evaluation System page and FAQs:
- Public examinations are held twice a year, in April–May and October–November, on dates NIOS fixes.
- You can also take exams through the On-Demand Examination System, in the subjects you are admitted to.
- At Secondary level, theory and practicals count as one unit: you need at least 33% in the aggregate of theory and practicals, where a subject has practicals.
- Learners get up to nine chances to appear in public examinations within the five years their admission is valid, and NIOS keeps passed subjects on record until all required subjects are cleared.

How admission works
NIOS runs fully online admission at Secondary level. You can register directly on the NIOS website, or get help at a nearby study centre or facilitation centre, at the relevant Regional Centre, or through a Common Services Centre.
At the time of admission you select an NIOS study centre (an Accredited Institution). NIOS sets admission sessions, fees and deadlines and publishes them on its website.

Class 10 questions
I failed Class 10 at another board. Can I do it through NIOS?
NIOS offers routes for learners who appeared at another board but did not pass, including Transfer of Credit for subjects already passed and part admission through the On-Demand system. Read Transfer of Credit and Class 10 On-Demand, then message us with your mark sheet details.
Is an NIOS Class 10 certificate recognised?
NIOS states that its Secondary and Senior Secondary certificates have the same recognition as those of other boards, and that NIOS Secondary passers can seek Class 11 admission in other boards. Individual institutions set their own admission criteria, so check with the school or college you are applying to.
What are the current fees and last dates?

How long do I have to finish?
Once registered, an NIOS admission is valid for five years.
