NIOS Class 12 admission guide
The NIOS Senior Secondary course is NIOS's Class 12 qualification. Here is who can apply, how subjects and exams work, and the rules worth knowing before you choose your subjects.

About the NIOS Senior Secondary course
NIOS offers the Senior Secondary course in English, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali mediums. As with Class 10, you study through open schooling with NIOS material and sit NIOS examinations.
Who can apply
NIOS sets two conditions:
- You must have passed the Secondary course (Class 10) from a recognised board.
- You must be at least 15 years old as on 31 July of the year of admission.
Documents
Because eligibility depends on your Secondary pass and your age, expect to show proof of both. We have not found an official NIOS page listing the complete Senior Secondary document set that we could confirm, so we do not reproduce a list here.
Choosing your subjects
For certification at both levels, NIOS requires a pass in five subjects, including at least one and not more than two languages. You can opt for up to two additional subjects.

This is a partial list. NIOS advises checking its latest Academic Prospectus for the current subjects. The NIOS pages we checked list individual subjects rather than fixed “Science”, “Commerce” or “Arts” groups, so you choose your own combination. If you are aiming for a particular college course, check which Class 12 subjects it requires before you choose.
You can change one or more subjects within four years of registration, as long as the total does not go above seven. Changes are not allowed before your first exam, and subjects you have already passed cannot be changed.
The two-year gap rule
Exams and passing
- Public examinations are held twice a year, in April–May and October–November, on dates NIOS fixes.
- The On-Demand Examination System is also available at Senior Secondary level, in the subjects you are admitted to.
- To pass a subject at Senior Secondary level you need at least 33% separately in theory and in practicals (for subjects that have both), and 33% in the aggregate.
- If you pass the practical but not the theory, NIOS keeps your practical marks and you retake the theory.
- Once registered, your admission is valid for five years.
After Class 12
NIOS states that its certificates are valid, recognised and on par with those of other national and state boards, that the Association of Indian Universities has granted equivalence to NIOS courses for higher studies, and that certified learners may sit competitive exams if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Class 12 questions
I failed Class 12 at another board. What can I do?
NIOS allows Transfer of Credit for up to two subjects passed at another board in the last five years, and offers part admission through the On-Demand system. See Transfer of Credit and Class 12 On-Demand.
What is the last date for NIOS Class 12 admission?
Class 12 follows the same Stream-1 admission blocks as Class 10. The current dates are in our NIOS admission last date 2026–27 guide.
Can I improve my marks after passing?
NIOS allows a passed subject to be improved once through the public examination within five years, and as many times as you want through On-Demand exams. The better result is shown on the mark sheet.
Do I have to attend classes?
NIOS study centres run Personal Contact Programmes. NIOS's FAQ says attending fewer sessions does not stop you from appearing in the exam, but it is worth attending as many as you can.
