NIOS Transfer of Credit (TOC)
If you passed some subjects at another board but did not complete Class 10 or Class 12, Transfer of Credit may let you carry those marks into NIOS, so you only study and sit the subjects you still need.
TOC in brief
- From another board
- Up to two subjects
- Passed within
- The last five years
- Subject must be
- In the NIOS scheme of studies
- When to ask
- At the time of admission
What Transfer of Credit is
NIOS describes TOC as transferring the marks of subjects you passed at your previous (“parent”) board to NIOS for certification. Ex-students of other boards who passed at least one subject can use it when they take admission.
Conditions NIOS sets
- Candidates from other boards can transfer up to two subjects.
- The subjects must have been passed in the last five years.
- The subjects must be part of the NIOS scheme of studies.
- TOC is requested at the time of admission, not afterwards.
How to request TOC
- 1
Collect your previous mark sheet
You need the original mark sheet of your previous board. - 2
Apply for NIOS admission
Request Transfer of Credit as part of your admission and submit the original mark sheet along with the admission form. - 3
On-Demand route
If you are taking admission into On-Demand exams with TOC, NIOS asks you to send the original failed mark sheet, with your reference or enrolment number, to the NIOS Online Cell in Noida.
An example from NIOS
NIOS gives this case: a learner who passed three subjects at CBSE can transfer two of them through TOC and take the remaining three through On-Demand exams to get a certificate. Five subjects are needed for certification, so the two transferred subjects count towards that total.
TOC questions
Can I transfer more than two subjects from my old board?
Not according to NIOS's FAQ: the limit for other-board candidates is two subjects.
I passed my subjects seven years ago. Can I still use TOC?
NIOS's condition is that the subjects were passed in the last five years. Ask NIOS directly about your case.
